When Matt Cohen took the role of Detective Burrow on Young and Restless, he knew that he would be running into some familiar faces around the studio. But he was surprised to see former General Hospital co-star Roger Howarth, who had also recently joined the soap’s cast to play a recast Matt Clark, now going by the name of Mitch Bacall. During Cohen’s 2016-19 run as Dr. Griffin Munro on the ABC soap, he and Howarth — who was playing Franco Baldwin during that time — forged a close bond.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me

“Roger and I, we got to cross paths at General Hospital,” Cohen shared with Soap Opera Digest, “and for whatever reason, we’re just two guys that connected, kind of, emotionally, call it. And we didn’t get to spend a lot of time together, but we did work together a bit, and we chatted a lot on set. He was one of the people that reached out to me when I left there, and the way he reached out to me was really sweet. He was just a kind guy.” Read the rest of this entry »

When Detective Burrow first showed up on Young and Restless, investigating the car accident that nearly killed Noah Newman (Lucas Adams), he appeared to be a by-the-book cop. But soon enough, it became obvious that the guy had a shady side, and now it has been revealed that he’s working for Mitch Bacall (Roger Howarth), who is actually the notorious villain Matt Clark. But Burrow’s portrayer, Matt Cohen, promises there’s still more going on here than meets the eye. “There’s some things unfolding literally as we speak,” the actor teases to Soap Opera Digest. “There is a reason, obviously, that Burrow’s gotta be doing what he’s doing. Maybe being a detective doesn’t pay enough, and it’s as simple a reason as that? But I highly doubt in soap land that it’s as simple a reason as that, if you know what I’m saying. Be suspicious.”

The Dark Side

Soap fans who are familiar with Cohen from his 2016-19 run as good guy Dr. Griffin Munro on ABC’s General Hospital might be surprised to see him playing a baddie, but the actor is having a blast. “You know what’s crazy?” Cohen says with a laugh. “I don’t know what it says about me, but it’s the easiest character I’ve played in a long time. Burrow, he’s into some stuff, and I just feel like that’s kind of what life dishes you out — in life, you’re kind of dealt a hand, and you gotta figure it out, no matter what it is. And Burrow is very much getting dealt a hand. And it’s fun.” Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Cohen will make his debut as Detective Burrow on The Young and the Restless on October 16, six years after his last soap appearance as General Hospital‘s Griffin Munro.

Cohen says he’s been looking for an opportunity like this for a while. “I read the audition, and I had been wanting to play a very similar role to this for a long time,” Cohen explains. “It’s a really fun detective. He’s good, he’s bad, he’s everything in between. He’s got a lot to deliver for the audience. Sharon (Newman, Sharon Case) and Nick (Newman, Joshua Morrow) have a big situation going on and he’s involved. He’s investigating and he’s going to get to the bottom of it in one way, shape, or form, and the result is going to be astounding.”

In addition to the excitement of joining Y&R, the new gig allows Cohen to reconnect with a host of familiar faces. “I started my career in Hollywood with an old friend producing a movie, and that old friend happened to be Michael Graziadei (Daniel Romalotti), who I love thoroughly,” he shares. “When this project came up, I said, ‘Man, I know Graz is back on the show, and Michelle Stafford‘s (Phyllis Summers) my dear friend from General Hospital (where she played Nina Reeves), and Hayley Erin (Claire Newman; ex-Kiki Jerome, GH) is there, too.’ I introduced her to her husband Adam Fergus, who is one of my best friends in the world, and they have a beautiful family together. My dear friend Roger (Howarth, ex-Franco, GH) is also here, as is Tamara Braun (Sienna Bacall). So, we are really having fun. It’s a bunch of old friends getting to play around on the stage again, and it’s really been rewarding.” Read the rest of this entry »
